Safety tips for drivers amid winter weather conditions

“It is important to clear all snow from your vehicle, including windshields, roof, truck, and hood, before driving to ensure good visibility,” local police told Dear Niagara.

As cold and icy conditions remain after multiple winter storms slammed Niagara, local police have given a list of safety tips to Dear Niagara to help residents stay safe during frigid weather.

The good news is the winter conditions do not appear to have caused an increase in motor vehicle collisions, the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) told Dear Niagara.

“The NRPS advises drivers to excessive caution during winter conditions and adjusting your driving to match road conditions by slowing down and maintaining extra space between vehicles,” they said.

“Additionally, it is important to clear all snow from your vehicle, including windshields, roof, truck, and hood, before driving to ensure good visibility.”

Here’s a list of safety tips from NRPS to stay safe during inclement winter weather:

  • Delay your trip if possible until weather conditions improve.

  • Check current and forecasted weather conditions before traveling.

  • Ensure your fuel tank is full to stay warm in case of delays.

  • Dress appropriately for winter even when traveling by car.

The NRPS has also advised for drivers to carry a winter survival kit that includes items like a shovel, blanket, warm clothes, food, booster cables, a flashlight, matches, and a candle.
