Tax season starts next week. Here’s what you need to know

This year, the CRA has brought in document verification service, online chat and simplified access to your CRA account.

Tax season is fast approaching as Canadians can begin to file their return online starting Feb. 24.

Last tax season, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) received more than 33 million returns, they said in a Feb. 18 press release.

This lead to more than $52 billion in benefit payments issued. More than 19 million refunds were issued, with an average amount of $2,294, according to the CRA.

In Ontario, more than 257,600 residents were helped by free tax clinics through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program during last year’s tax season, the CRA said.

Eligible Ontarians received an average of $8,290 in Canada child benefit payments, $460 in GST/HST credit payments, and $600 in Canada Carbon Rebate payments, according to the CRA.

This year, the CRA has brought in document verification service, online chat and simplified access to your CRA account, they said in the release.

The deadline for most individuals to file their tax return and pay any taxes owed is April 30.

June 15 is the deadline to file if you, or your spouse or common-law partner, are self-employed.
