Don’t let a scammer steal your bank card: police warn of new ATM scheme
Those who may have witnessed these incidents or have video footage have been asked to contact detectives.
The Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) are warning the public of an ATM scam that leaves victims with a stolen bank card.
The scam involves a suspect using distraction methods to divert a bank customer’s attention to steal their bank card while they are using an ATM, the NRPS said in a recent press release.
The scammer will typically approach the victim at an ATM and claim they have dropped a $5 bill on the ground nearby. While the victim is distracted, another suspect swaps out their bank card with one that’s counterfeit or blank, according to the NRPS.
“The victim remains unaware of the theft until it’s too late,” the police service said.
The NRPS has also released a list of tips to avoid falling victim to the ATM scam, reminding residents to “stay aware of their surroundings.”
They have also advised to be cautious of distractions and to report any suspicious behaviour by calling (905) 688-4111, option 3, ext. 1022200.
Members of the public who wish to provide information anonymously can contact Crime Stoppers of Niagara online or by calling 1-800-222-8477. Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards to persons who contact the program with information which leads to an arrest.
