Ontarian’s well-being at risk as trade tensions escalate: Mental health association

“Research shows that economic instability can increase the risk of mental health and addiction issues, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario, said.

As international trade tensions continue to escalate, the mental well-being of Ontarian’s is at risk, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Ontario has warned.

“Studies show the consequences are not just economic,” CMHA said in a press release earlier this month.

“Research shows that economic instability can increase the risk of mental health and addiction issues, including anxiety, depression and substance issues,” they said, noting people experiencing financial strain are also less likely to seek mental health care.

Those working in industries affected by tariffs are “especially likely” to experience an increased strain on their mental well-being, according to CMHA. These industries include automotive, construction, agriculture, and forestry and mining.

“In the face of these challenges, CMHA Ontario is concerned the community mental health and addictions sector is not equipped for the influx of support that will likely be needed by Ontarians,” they said.

CMHA Ontario has called on “all parties to commit to greater investments to ensure that Ontario’s critical mental health and addictions workforce can help meet a growing demand for service, as well as additional investments for supportive housing and crisis services.”
