LCBO to replace U.S. products with ‘suitable alternatives’

American products were officially removed from LCBO store shelves Tues., in Ontario’s first round of retaliation against U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian goods.

Now that U.S. alcohol products have been pulled from the racks of LCBO stores across Ontario, “suitable alternatives” are to replace the now bare shelves, the control board told Dear Niagara.

“LCBO will be replacing U.S. products with suitable alternatives. This includes local Ontario-made and Canadian-made spirits, wine, cider, beer and ready-to-drink beverages,” the press office told Dear Niagara in a statement Wednesday.

American products were officially removed from LCBO stores Tues., in Ontario’s first round of retaliation against U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian goods.

“American brands will no longer be available in LBCO catalogues,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said at a press conference Tues., while announcing retailitory measures.

Ford also noted other retailers and bars in the province will no longer be able to restock American alcohol products.

“This is an enormous hit to American producers. Every year the LCBO sells nearly $1 billion worth of U.S. wine, beer, seltzers, and spirits,” he said.

Customers at the LCBO have been “open to discovering something new,” the statement said.

The LCBO has even created a new “Eh list” on lcbo.com which allows customers to browse their collection of over 3,000 Ontario and Canadian products.
