‘People are getting very sick:’ Niagara Health warns of ‘alarming’ surge in flu cases
“We are seeing high numbers of flu cases in our hospitals, and people are getting very sick,” Dr. Karim Ali, Medical Director, Infection, Prevention & Control and Head of Service for Infectious Diseases at Niagara Health said.
Niagara is currently experiencing its worst flu season since before the COVID-19 pandemic, experts warn.
“We are seeing high numbers of flu cases in our hospitals, and people are getting very sick,” Dr. Karim Ali, Medical Director, Infection, Prevention & Control and Head of Service for Infectious Diseases at Niagara Health, said in a Monday news release.
“Flu is not just a seasonal nuisance — it can lead to serious complications, and this year is proving that,” Dr. Karim said.
Several patients in Niagara are currently being treated in intensive care, with more admitted to the hospital for flu-related complications, the press release said.
The flu can be life-threatening, especially for seniors, young children and those with underlying health conditions, the release stated.
“With flu season in full swing, it’s important to remember that the flu vaccine is an effective tool in protecting yourself and others against the current strain,” Dr. Azim Kasmani, Niagara’s Regional Medical Officer of Health said.
“While the season is underway, it’s never too late to get vaccinated. The flu shot continues to be the best way to prevent the flu and reduce the risk of severe illness and complications,” Dr. Kasmani said.
Hospitals are bracing for even more cases in the weeks ahead, according to Dr. Kasmani.
