Canada announces new Russian sanctions after Zelenskyy, Trump spat
Feb. 24 marked three years of Russia’s invasion on Ukraine.
Just two days after a spat between the leader of Ukraine and the U.S., Canada has announced new sanctions against entities it says are complicit in Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
On Sunday while participating in the “Securing our Future Summit” in the United Kingdom, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new sanctions against 10 individuals and 21 entities.
Those sanctioned include paramilitary organizations and third-party organizations and their leaders, according to a Sunday press release.
The sanctions were announced to help counter Russia’s reliance on these entities to advance its “political and military objectives in Ukraine,” the release said.
On Feb. 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump held a meeting in front of media where Trump and his Vice President JD Vance berated Zelenskyy.
Trump and Vance called Zelenskyy “ungrateful,” “disrespectful,” and said he is “gambling with World War III.”
“You don’t have the cards,” Trump said to Zelenskyy on Feb. 28.
“Offer some words of appreciation for the United States of America and. The president who’s trying to save your country,” Vance said.
Zelenskyy was originally at the White House to sign a minerals deal with America but left before the deal was signed.
After the meeting, Trudeau took to social media to share his support for Ukraine.
“For three years now, Ukrainians have fought with courage and resilience. Their fight for democracy and sovereignty is a fight that matters to us all,” he said Feb. 28.
“Canada will continue to stand with Ukraine and Ukrainians in achieving a just and lasting peace,” he added.
Feb. 24 marked three years of Russia’s invasion on Ukraine.
National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) said the “shameful attack by Trump and Vance on President Zelenskyy was one of the most disgraceful things we have ever witnessed from a U.S. Administration.”
“To berate the leader of a country fighting for its life against Russia’s genocidal war is an act of perfidy and dishonesty that is a stain on the United States. To say that Ukraine’s is not ready for peace is simply a lie,” UCC National President Alexandra Chyczij said.
To date, Canada has imposed sanctions on over 3,000 individuals and entities complicit in Russia’s aggression, according to the press release.
“We remain committed to working with our partners to increase economic pressures on Russia,” the release said.
